De pontons van het Prins Bernhard Dok

“Prins Bernhard” Dock 9, 1959 – 1983, floating dry dock

The pontoons of this dock were built by the Belgian shipyard Jos Boel & Zn in Temse and the side cabinets by the Kloos company in Kinderdijk. The purchasing group Coopra from Rotterdam was involved in the delivery of the steel. The towing of the dock to the RDM shipyard was done by L. Smit & Co. On 1 May 1959, the newly built 42,000 ton “PRINS BERNHARD DOK 9” was put into use in the Heysehaven of the RDM with the docking of the “ROTTERDAM”. The dock is suitable for tankers up to 85,000 tons deadweight.

That same month, the even larger 54,000 ton “PRINS BERNHARD DOK 10” would also arrive in the Heysehaven. At that time, for docking very large ships, it was no longer necessary to go to Wilton-Fijenoord, on the other side of the Maas in Schiedam. The “PRINS BERNHARD DOK 9” was sold 25 years later – in 1984 after the bankruptcy of the RDM – to the Korean shipyard Deawoo and then went through life there as “Okpo Royal Dock”. Okpo is the name of the place in Korea where the Deawoo shipyard is located.
